MSI 2022 Preview Series: G2 Esports

| | , ,

With the 2022 Mid-Season Invitational on the horizon, only three champions left that we have not talked about yet. There will not be a review for PSG Talon because we already told their stories in another article when they claimed the VCS trophy. If you are interested in reading about PSG’s journey to the MSI 2022, you can reach out to the publication from here. Today, we will take a detailed look at the most accomplished European team, G2 Esports. Let’s start with their revamped roster that reached the championship in the 2022 LEC Spring Split.

G2 Esports’ starting lineup

G2 Esports parted ways with Wunder, Mikyx, and Rekkless to rebuild the starting lineup after underperforming in the 2021 Summer Split. Their super team project completely failed, and G2 started revamping their roster without wasting time. The European organization acquired Targamas from Karmine Corp, and his bot lane partner, Flakked, joined the team in the offseason.

To fill the void left by Wunder, Broken Blade transferred to the team after Schalke 04 sold their LEC spot to Team BDS. Broken Blade exceeded the expectations in the spring and allowed G2 to use himself both on the weak and strong sides. Targamas quickly adjusted to the team even though Flakked needed more time to reach his top form. G2’s starting lineup includes Broken Blade, Jankos, Caps, Flakked, and Targamas.

Nobody expected G2 Esports to win the league with their newly restructured roster, given the other teams, such as Fnatic and Vitality, made big moves before the 2022 Spring began. Vitality formed a European super team with Carrzzy, Selfmade, Alphari, Perkz, and Labrov, but they had the same troubles as G2. On the other side, Fnatic reinforced the starting roster by gaining Wunder and Humanoid. G2 were not even in consideration for the championship. However, things got out of hand in the playoffs, and G2 somehow claimed the title with a flawless lower bracket run.

The 2022 LEC Spring Season was expected to be a banger

G2 were not the only team that shocked the fans in the previous season. Although Rogue lost Inspired and Hans Sama to the North American teams, Rogue finished the regular split in first place with their average roster that includes Malrang and rookie Comp. To return to the subject, G2 Esports had three competent teams to overcome on the way to the trophy. After being humiliated by Fnatic in the first round, G2 Esports demolished Vitality and Misfits Gaming without giving a single match.

There was a rematch between Fnatic and G2 Esports in the lower bracket finals, and G2 took the mental advantage because Fnatic lost to Rogue disappointedly in the previous series. Unfortunately, the semifinals were one-sided and dull, where G2 maintained their winning streak. Rogue and G2 met in the grand finals, and G2 could make a difference with their experienced players throughout the series. With another 3-0 win in the playoffs, G2 Esports secured their spot at MSI 2022.

G2 will face off against Evil Geniuses and ORDER in group C. European fans think this group is a cakewalk for G2. If Evil Geniuses can not stand against G2, the competition in group C will be as monotonous as the LEC playoffs.
