MSI 2022 Chronicles: Saigon Buffalo

| | , ,

We are running on our MSI series with another Asian team, Saigon Buffalo. In case you have not heard about the team before, Saigon Buffalo will represent VCS (Vietnam Championship Series)at MSI 2022 in group A. Vietnam region has sent none of its representatives to the international tournaments for the past two years due to COVID precautions and travel restrictions. The government’s position on this issue was clear, so VCS was not able to take part in last year’s MSI and World Championship.

Saigon Buffalo will represent VCS as regional finalist

Although Saigon Buffalo are not the champion of the VCS, they qualified for the MSI 2022 because Gigabyte Marines will represent Vietnam in Southeast Asian Games, which will be held at the same time as MSI. What lies behind the decision is unknown, but consequently, we will finally meet the Vietnamese League of Legends in an international tournament after a long break.

Saigon Buffalo starting lineup includes Hasmed, Bean J, Bigcoro, Froggy, Shogun, Taki, and two substitutes, Ribell and P. There is no import on the team and most of the starting roster comprises rookie players promoted from the academy team.

Buffalos closed out the regular season with 9-5 in second place behind GBM. Gigabyte Marines had an outstanding 14-0 record in the VCS 2022 Spring and reached the championship with a phenomenal undefeated playoff run. Saigon Buffalo defeated Team Secret 3-2 in the semifinals, but they succumbed to GBM in the grand finals. It was enough for them to have advanced to the finals, considering the team was in the process of rebuilding.

Saigon Buffalo will square off against T1, Team Aze, and DetonatioN FocusMe in group A. They will have to beat DFM to make their way to the rumbling stage. If Saigon fails in the group stage, no one gets mad at them because the Japanese representative, DFM, are coming into the tournament in pretty good shape. On the bright side, Saigon’s young players will have gained experience at the end of the MSI 2022.
