Despite being stated by both Sony and Microsoft that they would like to end the console war in the ninth console generation, things are proving to be quite the opposite. Xbox and PlayStation platforms are clashing with one another more than ever before. Even Nintendo is stepping up to the fight with not just its traditional first-party exclusives but with a lot of multiplatform titles that the powerful Switch handles quite well.
Acquisition of large gaming studios, exclusive titles, subscriber services, cloud gaming, hardware, and more – all these features can lead you to a console from the big three. If PlayStation is your console of choice, you would definitely ask yourself questions like – ‘Is my console giving me good titles? What should I play next?’
Well, don’t worry as you are in a rather good position! 2022 will give us access to some pretty great PlayStation games. Long-awaited exclusives coming from award-winning studios owned by Sony, as well as multiplatform games that will use the revolutionary PS5’s Dualsense – we can definitely come up with quite a long list.
Here are our top PlayStation games to look forward to in 2022 that we’ve summed up for your PlayStation consoles!
Despite being published by Bethesda, the highly anticipated Ghostwire Tokyo will still be hitting the PS5 as a timed exclusive. But what’s all the fuss around this title? Well, Ghostwire Tokyo is being developed by Shiji Mikami. If you haven’t heard of him, he’s a talented man involved with some of the greatest PlayStation titles of all time such as Onimusha, Dino Crisis, Resident Evil 4, the original Devil May Cry and many more.
Not relying on just anticipation and fan interest, the gameplay trailer from the 2021’s PlayStation Showcase event blew us all away. Through the first-person point of view, the game will let the player use different psychic and paranormal abilities to fight ghosts and evil spirits around Tokyo.
Japan’s capital city is being taken out by the so-called Visitors as all of the city’s population has mysteriously disappeared and it is up to you to unfold the mystery. How are you supposed to fight those evil spirits? The combat system was described by the developers as ‘karate meets magic’. Remember the ninja hand gestures from Naruto? You got those! Ghostwire Tokyo is set to be released in 2022 for the PS5!
Forspoken is another high-profile upcoming title for PS5 that we saw in September’s PlayStation Showcase event. It was one of the games that made the show jaw-dropping. Square Enix gave us a good glimpse of how the game will look and play and we are excitedly waiting to get our hands on it.
A vast open world, photorealistic graphics powered by the Luminous engine, the ability to travel wherever you wish at any time, fast-paced combat, role-playing gaming mechanisms, and much more are to be tied in with the game’s plot. The story centers around Frey Holland, a girl who got lost in the supernatural world of Athia, after being magically transported from New York.
Forspoken is coming only for the PS5 and not PS4. There is no reason to be afraid that the last-gen will hold it back as it gets ray tracing, large-scale locations, enhanced lighting, graphical features, and anything else that comes to your mind, you next-gen maniacs!
Horizon Forbidden West
Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the core PlayStation games that anyone deserves and has to play! We all knew that a sequel would be inevitable and after several delays, we are finally getting a release window in 2022. Horizon Forbidden West will continue the story of Aloy of the Nora Tribe, who is traveling to the vast territories of the Forbidden West to find a way to stop a mysterious plague that kills or corrupts anything that it infects.
The trailers showed us that Horizon Forbidden West is keeping the tone of its predecessor from 2017 and continues to build on it as new kinds of terrains are present along with enhanced combat and better climbing mechanics. What really caught our attention was underwater exploration, which is usually overlooked these days. If the surface is dangerous, just imagine what kinds of mechanical monstrosities are lurking in the depths of the sea!
Horizon Forbidden West will land on the PS4 and PS5 on the 18th of February!
There is an abysmal chance that you have never heard of Elden Ring. Trailers, hype, and talks about it are all over the internet, and there is definitely a reason for all that. The latest FromSoftware game is set to raise the bar higher than ever.
Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro – it’s like every game they brought us just keeps getting better and better. But even so, Elden Ring is expected to be their greatest creation yet. This time the story and world-building are created in cooperation with non-other than George R.R Martin himself! So far, storytelling was never the main focus but this time FromSoftware is going for a different approach.
Elden Ring is actually a part of the Dark Souls world and will stay true to the dark tone of the franchise. Core gameplay elements will be kept as well, so expect to die a lot, but new stuff is coming. Exploration is going to play a major role as the Elden Ring is going to be fully open-world.
The just-released gameplay video footage showed us a more complex combat system, mounted combat, new stealth moves, heavy use of magic, and a multiplayer consisting of co-op, PvP, and Invasions. Ready to recover the stolen pieces of the Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord? The twisted fantasy world of the Lands Between grimly awaits you on the PS4 and PS5 available on February 25, 2022!
Despite having read the books and watched the movies we all want to get back to the magical world of Harry Potter, don’t we? The recently announced Hogwarts Legacy is going to be your Hogwarts express waiting for you on King’s Cross Station Platform 9¾ in 2022.
The game is going to explore the magical world from the books, after the events of the movies. Harry himself might not be present, but expect iconic characters to return. Of course, as the name suggests the game will take place in Hogwarts, but the world beyond it will be hugely explorable as the trailers had shown us.
We never really got a decent game about the Harry Potter franchise and Hogwarts Legacy might be the perfect opportunity to jump into it. The game will feature an open-world setting and will have action role-playing elements. You will be able to create your own Hogwarts student and customize it any way you want. Casting spells, brewing potions, training magical beasts under your own will and much more await you!
Gran Tourismo 7
Long before Forza installed itself as the best racing game for the Xbox, Gran Turismo was not just the best PlayStation racing simulator but one of the best racing games no matter the platform. With each new generation of PlayStation consoles, we were granted a Gran Turismo game that pushes the new hardware to its limits, making the driving simulation better and more complex than ever before.
Fasten your seatbelts, ladies and gentlemen! Gran Turismo 7 is coming on March 4, 2022, and is going to be the first game in the series that is coming for two generations of PlayStation consoles. So, PS4 owners, your prayers are heard!
The game is going to build on everything Gran Turismo 5 and 6 were. GT Simulation mode is back, alongside Special Events, Championships, Driving School, Tuning Parts Shop, GT Auto, GT Sport mode, and more. Tracks and modes are here, but what about wheels? Don’t worry, the latest trailer revealed more than 400 cars to choose from!
If you are a PS5 owner, the game is going to be extra polished on it, taking advantage of ray-tracing, reduced loading times, 4k/60fps with active HDR, and last but not least taking advantage of the revolutionary DualSense for even more realistic driving!
God of War Ragnarok
You all knew that this was going to be a mandatory title on this list! God of War (2018) was a unique and genius approach to a continuation of the franchise that has been a console seller since 2005. After some delays, we still don’t have a release date but at least we have a gameplay trailer to get a taste of how the game will look and play like. No doubt, God of War: Ragnarok stole the PlayStation Showcase event!
The trailer still showed the father and son conflict we all loved in the original. Atreus is several years older, most likely in his early teens, and is going to be much more trouble for his enemies and most likely for his father as well.
God of War: Ragnarok is going to end the Norse Saga as the title hints. So expect large-scale clashes with Thor and the king of the gods, Odin himself! To prevent Ragnarok and seek answers, Kratos and Atreus find themselves on a quest to find and free Tyr, the Norse god of war who was believed to be dead!
Ragnarok will most likely stay true to the gameplay mechanics from the previous game but as we saw – combat, enemies, and levels are going to be much more diverse. Another sign for this different approach is that the game is going to have a new director.
We still don’t know much about the story but one thing is for sure, the Norse gods are in huge trouble as we all know what Kratos did to the Greek Pantheon!
Even though the PS5 is Sony’s most advanced console that was released more than a year ago, we are yet to witness what it is capable of. Just as with every new console, the launch title list was pretty short. Aside from the fact that it was a nightmare to find the console in stock.
Another thing holding back the console was the fact that (aside from a few exceptions) all PS5 games are coming to PS4 as well. Which is holding back the developers in terms of using the full power that the PS5 has to offer.
Even though not all of the PlayStation games on the list above are exclusives, the platform might be the best place to play all of them because of the hardware, personal preferences, player base, and much more.
