The next-generation of consoles are here (or the current-gen if you want to be persnickety about it) and many people currently have one sitting at home.
Chances are, you might have a PS5 too, or one of the two new Xbox consoles that Microsoft has released onto the world.
But then again…it might be that you don’t have one of the new gaming machines yet.
Scalpers have been snapping them up as soon as stock arrives online, so you may have been forced into an endless queue to get one, only to be out of luck minutes later. The new consoles are fairly expensive too, so it might be that you can’t afford to pick one up yet. This sucks, right?
Well, if you don’t have one of the new consoles to play on, know this. It’s okay to wait! Here are the reasons why.
#1: You probably still have games to play on your current console
The number of games released on the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch stretch into the thousands so it is unlikely that you have played everything yet. With great games to play on all of the three main systems, including these PS4 exclusives, you won’t get bored anytime soon. And yes, we know you can play your older games on the new consoles, but as the move into the new generation is expensive, is that reason to justify the expense?
#2: There aren’t that many exclusives to play on the new consoles
The majority of titles that are currently available on the PS5 can be played on the PS4. While there are some exclusives that are only available on the new console, they are arguably not worth making the transition for. Godfall underwhelmed critics, Bugsnax isn’t a console seller, and Destruction All-Stars isn’t the ‘all star’ it claims to be. These are all Sony titles. When it comes to Microsoft, exclusive titles such as the next Halo are still a long way off.
For Sony at least, new exclusives are now trickling out. Returnal recently launched and a new Ratchet & Clank is coming. But considering the next point, you might still want to wait before buying a new console.
#3: The new console games are expensive
Are you willing to pay $70 for a new game? If you have a PS5 or one of the two new Xbox consoles, this is the kind of price you are looking at! Gaming is an expensive hobby but it can be less expensive if you wait until game prices drop.
There is also the fact that non-exclusive games can be bought for less on the ‘last-gen’ consoles, so despite the shinier graphics and speedier loading times on a new-gen machine, is it really worth making the transition?
Before you buy one of the latest consoles, you can save money by picking up second-hand titles of games you haven’t played yet on your current console. There are also games you can play without having to spend a dime. We aren’t just talking about console games either. The mobile market has a huge selection of free titles, and there are a ton of games you can play from your web browser. Politics & War is a great create your own country game, for example.
So, bide your time, save your money, and consider buying into the new generation of gaming when it won’t dismantle your bank balance!
