Today’s video games are all about DLCs. In the past, we would get a game and every content in the game was ours. However, DLCs changed the entire video gaming industry. Now, we pay more for the in-game items rather than the actual game itself.
Of course, while some companies do not take this business model, most do. It generates a constant stream of money after all. Today, we are going to take a look at the most insanely priced DLCs we have ever seen. Prepare to be shocked by these outstanding DLC prices.
10. Europa Universalis IV
Do you love historical games and do you want to conquer the world? If your answer is yes, then Europa Universalis 4 might be the one for you. EU4 is an amazing game and for USD$40 you can get the base game.
Europa Universalis 4 is a grand strategy game, where you can play as every nation in the world. Your journey will begin in the late middle ages and it will span to the early modern period. You will be able to colonize the world and change history according to what you want. However, the game’s DLC content was always criticized. Today if you want to purchase all of the DLC packs you will have to pay roughly USD$350.
9. LittleBigPlanet 3
Well, we all love a cute game, where you can relax a little bit. Just take a look at the success of Fall Guys in such a short span of time. LittleBigPlanet 3 is a puzzle-platform game available on the PS3 and PS4. If you would like to try this chill game out, remember to get your PSN Gift Cards ready.
The game was USD$19.99 at release and it was reasonably priced. The game was a victim of generation change between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, however, this did not stop the developers from monetizing it like there is no tomorrow. The entire sum of DLCs available for the game was a shocking USD$470. You can buy a console for that price, but this is nothing compared to what’s coming later on the list.
8. The Sims 4
Most of us grew up with Sims as it is the ultimate life simulator. The game is a definite commercial success and there is a TV show based on it currently in the works as well. When Sims 3 was criticized for the number of DLCs, we expected EA to change their ways a little with Sims 4. Especially when Sims 4 was released for USD$60, we thought this means there will be fewer DLCs. Boy, were we wrong.
Sims 4 turned out to be an insane game with tons of features locked behind DLC. Currently, the entire sum of the DLCs for Sims 4 is more than USD$500. This means you can literally get the upcoming Nvidia 3070 for the same price.
7. GTA V: Online: Diamond Casino and Resort
GTA V is one of the most successful games of all time. The series broke several records and is the type of game where you can do anything you want while running around a big city. Currently, GTA V costs USD$30. This includes the base game and the online version. However, once you step into the online game, you will notice that everything is really expensive. But the Diamond & Casino update broke an all-new record.
Don’t get me wrong, the update is super nice, but in order to buy everything in it, you would need to spend USD$800 just to save yourself from hundreds of hours of grind. To take the easy way out, some expensive sacrifices have to be made.
6. Dead or Alive 5: Last Round (Full Game)
The Dead or Alive series is well known around the world. As a series they are great and like most games on our list, it costs USD$60. Dead or Alive is a fighting game, where players are able to play as a variety of different characters. The game is available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. Although the PC version lacks on some fronts, it certainly does not lack on the pricing of DLC.
Currently, if you want to purchase the entire DLC set on Steam you would need to spend a grand total of up to USD$1,200. The developers stated that they want to support the game for a long time, well.. with these prices they most definitely have to.
5. X-Plane 11
How about simulators? X-Plane Simulator lets you be the pilot and fly around the world. If you’ve always wanted to be a pilot then X-Plane 11 is the one for you. The game is offered on Steam for a mere USD$60. This lets you use the most basic airplanes in the world, but if you want to pilot something else, you are going to need to spend a few bucks more.
Get ready to have your socks knocked off, this game’s DLC will set you back USD$2,164 in total. Most of these items are different planes with full simulation capabilities, but for this price, you can get an actual flying lesson.
4. Microsoft Flight Simulator X
Well, another flight simulator game on our list is Microsoft Flight Simulator X. No, it’s not the new version of the game, this is the old one from 2006. This game is cheaper than most games on our list with a USD$25 price tag. Microsoft Flight Simulator X is critically acclaimed by many players.
However, at the same time, Microsoft Simulator X earned quite a reputation for the DLC packs. The game has roughly 280 DLCs and the total price tag is around USD$2,330. Well, we are sure that the new one will pass even this one on the price list, but it will take a decade or so.
3. Rocksmith 2014
Do you want to play guitar like a rockstar? Ubisoft has got you covered, as long as you pay for each and every song. Rocksmith 2014 is one of the best guitar learning games out there. The game is still really good and it only costs USD$30 to purchase the remastered version.
However, the only problem is the DLC prices. The entire collection of songs will cost more than USD$6,500. I would much rather get actual guitar classes with that price point.
2. Train Simulator 2020
As you may have noticed, most of the list consists of simulators. This time we have a Train Simulator game on our hands. Train Simulator 2020 is a game where you can drive trains in various parts of the world. The tracks are based on real life. If you want to buy the base game you will only spend USD$30. However, just like most of the simulators, the DLC prices are unusual.
Currently, if you want to buy everything in Train Simulator 2020 you will end up spending more than USD$11,000. You might as well just buy an Interrail train ticket valid for 30 days which is around USD$400 and you can travel anywhere in Europe.
1. Star Citizen: Legatus
Star Citizen is one of the most ambitious projects of all time. The game raised more than USD$300M in crowdfunding. It combines different genres, from MMO to shooter and everything happens in space. Currently, the release date for Star Citizen is still unknown and there is a possibility that we may never end up seeing this game.
Star Citizen will always be remembered for one DLC pack, ‘The Legatus’. This is perhaps the most expensive item in the history of video games. The Legatus pack costs a whooping USD $27,000 and it is only available for backers who already donated more than USD $1,000.
To Sum It All Up
As you can see, most of the games on our list are simulators. Creating simulation games is not cheap so most of these are understandable. Lifelike simulations are extremely challenging for video game developers. But there are some good improvements such as the new Microsoft Flight Simulator using the online Bing maps to generate the world. These and many more improvements are making the game costs cheaper.
Also, these days we have free-to-play games dominating the market, such as Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone and Valorant. We did not include free-to-play games on our list, because they are already free. In reality, we all hope that gaming will become more accessible to everyone.
