Darwin Game
Release Date – January 4th 2020
Studios – Nexus
A fellow student that appears to be absent from school invites Sudou Kaname to a free-to-play app game. He accepts the request without a second thought, wondering what game was worth ‘skipping’ class over. However, it becomes apparent rather quickly that the app called ‘Darwin Game’ is no ordinary game. In fact, it’s a game where the balance of life and death is at stake. If you enjoy your survival titles with a battle royale vibe into the mix, this one will surely be worth checking out.
Dorohedoro
Release Date – January 13th 2020
Studios – MAPPA
The majority of readers of the source material never expected an anime adaptation to come. Why? Because the manga is over twenty years old. Taking place in the cyberpunk city called the ‘Hole’, humans are terrorized and enslaved for experiments via magical wielding beings named sorcerers from a different dimension. Caiman has no recollection of his memory nor how his head went through the transformation into a reptilian head.
With help from his friend Nikaido, they go on the hunt for sorcerers – biting their heads in the hope that being in Caiman’s mouth will uncover who the culprit is responsible for his transformation. It’s a hyper-violent series and if it’s anything like the other titles MAPPA has delivered in recent years, Dorohedoro will definitely not disappoint.
Itai no wa Iya nano de Bōgyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu
(I Hate Getting Hurt, So I Put All My Skill Points into Defense)
Release date – January 8th 2020
Studios – Silver Link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T752SSxstbA
Based on the light novel series, Risa Shiromine invites her classmate Kaede Honjou to play a VRMMO in the hopes they can play together after school. However, without much knowledge of video games and not keen on the concept of sustaining an injury – when she boots up “New World Online” and creates her character Maple (where have we heard Maple before in an MMO?), she invests all her skill points in defence. She finds herself nearly impenetrable to the majority of attacks and gains a special ability called “Absolute Defence”. This eventually leads to Maple being the topic of debate amongst other players.
Rikei ga Koi ni Ochita no de Shōmei Shite Mita
(Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove it)
Release Date – January 11th 2020
Studios – Zero-G
At Saitama University – 1st-year post-graduate students Himuro Ayame and Yukimura Shinya have feelings for each other. The problem? They’re scientists that want to find evidence that love can be scientifically explained. Using their feelings for each other and dragging other scientists they know into the experiments – they start their endeavours on proving the scientific formula for love.
Interestingly, this web manga series got a live-action adaptation back in 2018 consisting of four episodes. Hopefully, the series will have an appealing blend of comedy and romance. As the series has great potential to deliver some great one-liners and some laugh out loud moments.
Sorcerous Stabber Orphen
Release date – January 7th 2020
Studios – Studio Deen
After the initial delay of the series, the triumphant classic is finally making a comeback. In a new lick of paint in the form of a remake – in celebration of its 25 years anniversary. After a dreadful incident occurring at the Tower of Fang, a magical school for sorcerers, a magic-user named Azali is turned into a dragon. Also now known as the “Bloody August”. Our protagonist and black sorcerer Krylancelo drops out of the Tower of Fang after the institute refuses to help him on his endeavours, and begins his quest on saving his sister Azali – adopting the new name Orphen.
