Outriders is the Final Fantasy of Shooters I Always Wanted

Don’t shoot your eye out because Outriders is on the way! Do you like customizing characters? Game trailers with actual gameplay? Badass sci-fi powers and futuristic shootouts? If you answered no to any of the above: you’re wrong. Outriders is the upcoming RPG shooter from Square Enix and People Can Fly.

If you don’t recognize the name People Can Fly, they’re the studio behind some of the most popular shooters of the past decade, with titles like Gears of War and Fortnite. Fusing together the kings of fantasy and the lords of shooters, Outriders is a science fiction adventure of unknown proportions.

What’s it About?

My favorite question. You live on the space world of Enoch with your fellow humans after fleeing a dying Earth. Unfortunately, natives don’t appreciate hostile colonizers. Rather than lay down and die, you and your crew decide to venture into this strange new world…and die. Savage monsters and weird cult-like people roam the lands of your new home. That’s why it’s up to you to clear out the scum and make room for more civilized individuals.

The catch is, venturing out is eating away at your humanity and giving you fantastic powers. Master your power, reclaim your humanity, and colonize a world that really doesn’t want you to. Sounds daunting, but the biggest feature of Outriders is its cooperative playstyle. The player can optionally go at it alone or hook up some extra controllers for a little bit of help. Help meaning “willing meat shields,” of course.

When Will Outriders Ride Out?

The problem with that question is that there isn’t a concrete date yet. The game is scheduled for a release during the holiday season of this year, which means there will be a long wait until players can experience “Destiny: Survival Edition.” While details are in short supply, there is still a lot revealed. With the official release being in 10 months, it’s unknown just how much information will flood us in the interim.

Being People Can Fly’s first release after leaving Epic Games, there is no doubt that they’ll want their first independent game to be a smash hit. Outriders is expected to release on the Playstation 5, Xbox Series X, PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One. For more information, tune in to the livestream this Thursday, February 13th at 12 PM Pacific Time.
