New Pokémon Adventure Begins!
With a brand new Pokémon game debuting very soon, it was inevitable that a new Pokémon anime series would be airing alongside it. However, this upcoming new iteration will deviate more than ever from any other Pokémon series. Some fans have even speculated that it could be a reboot of sorts. Regardless, there will be many changes in the upcoming Pokémon series. So, here’s everything we know so far.
The new series, which will simply be called Pokémon (Pocket Monsters), is scheduled to debut in Japan on November 17th. With Pokémon Sun and Moon set to finish on episode 146 on November 3rd.

Pokémon Staff for the New Series
The new Pokémon series will still be brought to us by animation studio OLM. Chief Director will be Daiki Tomiyasu, well-known for directing ‘Pokémon Generation’. Kodaira Maki will be series director. Until now, they’ve only been assistant directors and have contributed towards storyboards towards several episodes of Sun and Moon. Another important change is that Shinji Miyazaki, the main composer of Pokémon since its iteration back in 1997 will not be returning for the upcoming series. Yuki Hayashi, well known for composing ‘My Hero Academia’ and ‘Haikyuu!!’, will make his debut to the Pokémon series.
Dual Protagonist
Ash Ketchum will no longer be the sole protagonist of the upcoming Pokémon series. A new character by the name of Gou will also have equal importance to Ash. They will be dual protagonists. It will certainly be interesting to see how the episodes play out as this is the first time dual protagonists will make an appearance in the Pokémon franchise. In light of this, fans have speculated that this is potentially the beginning of the end for Ash Ketchum. As it could lead to Ash eventually bowing out of series, giving the helm to Gou moving forward. Nevertheless, we’ll just have to wait and find out.
For now – we don’t know much about Gou. Gou’s personality will have a calm demeanour, however, he can be hot-headed at times. In addition, Gou’s partner will be a Scorbunny (the fire-type starter from the upcoming Sword and Shield). He will be on a quest to ‘catch them all’. However, his main goal is to catch the legendary Pokémon Mew that he saw when he was a young boy. Gou will be voiced by Daiki Yamashita, well-known for voice acting in ‘My Hero Academia’.
New Pokémon Characters and Regions
Furthermore, Gou will not be the only brand new character debuting in the new series. Professor Sakuragi (meaning cherry tree in Japan, keeping the tradition of professors being named after trees) will be a professor at Sakuragi Institute in Vermillion City. The new professor will be voiced by Yuichi Nakamura, who also voiced ‘N’ in the prior series.
Professor Sakuragi will have a daughter named Koharu who is a childhood friend of Gou and is the same age as him. Similarly, Koharu’s Pokémon partner will be ‘Yamper’ (another Pokémon from the upcoming Sword and Shield). Kana Hanazawa will be voice acting for Koharu in the upcoming series. It is unclear at this current moment if Koharu will become a companion, however, it may be a safe assumption she’s more likely to be rather than not.
Along with this, the new series will feature previous regions in the Pokémon series. Stereotypically, the region where the new upcoming game takes place is where the anime focuses correspondently. They will still explore the Galar region (the new region from Sword and Shield) however, they will also explore all prior regions from the Pokémon franchise. In any case, we won’t have long to wait with the new series premiering next month!
